About Us

Urth yoga was born from an idea between friends to create a yoga oasis in the heart of Silverlake, where people could come to practice yoga in an environmentally friendly space with easygoing teaching staff.

Most of our teachers have completed Anusara trainings and most are dedicated solely to this path. Some of our teachers are influenced by other styles and lineages and incorporate this into their classes. Irrespective of our teachers background and influences we all share the same goal; to help each and every student gain a deeper relationship between their body, mind and nature, to overcome physical and mental limitations and most importantly for a student to leave class feeling better than when they first arrived.

Part of enhancing a student’s experience is to make sure that we provide a simple, healthy environment in which to practice yoga in. Our studio was built using non-toxic and natural products. This includes the paint on our walls and coatings on our floors. We clean the studio and all of our yoga props with natural, biodegradable and where possible organic and fair-trade products. Our rental mats are cleaned after each use, with a tee tree oil solution and these mats and those for purchase are PVC and latex free. All paper products are 100% recycled and chlorine free and our brochures and flyers are printed with soy and vegetable based inks. We also offer filtered water to those who wish to bring their own containers.

Urth offers Hatha yoga classes 365 days a year.  For up to date information on class times, teachers and class levels, click on “schedule”. To learn more about each instructor and what to expect in their class, click on the teacher’s page. Please go to our price page to find out more about our ongoing introductory offers. These offers allow new students the opportunity to practice with our various teachers, explore our different classes, and play in a friendly environment for just a nominal fee.

We look forward to seeing you at Urth.

Frequently Asked Questions

I am new to yoga. Where do I begin?
Purchase one of our introductory offers; $49 monthly unlimited OR $20 for 10 days. This is an inexpensive way for you to try our basics classes. These are challenging classes that teach foundational poses, breathing techniques, and introduce you to the principles of alignment. Should you have any questions or concerns, your instructor will be happy to discuss these with you before or after class.

I am not flexible. Can I practice yoga?
Flexibility is one of the many benefits of a regular yoga practice. It is not a requirement. Many of us could not touch our toes (or even ankles) when we started. Yoga is largely about building strength, and although it might sound counter-intuitive, as you get stronger you will become more flexible.

Do I need to make a reservation?
No. If you are new to Urth, arrive 15 minutes before class is scheduled to start.

What should I wear? What should I bring?
Wear comfortable clothing that allows for dynamic movement. We suggest staying away from very baggy clothes as they can get in the way as you move during class. Bring a towel and water bottle (we provide free filtered water for you to refill your bottle).

Do I need a yoga mat?
We loan mats, free of charge, to students who purchase one of our introductory packages. For all other yoga students we highly recommend purchasing your own mat. We sell a variety of eco-friendly mats, and in the event you forget yours they are available to rent for $1.

I have an injury or illness. Can I safely practice yoga?
A good knowledgeable instructor, and a mindful practice can help heal your body. Be sure to let your teacher know of any injuries, illnesses or limitations you may have so he or she can offer modifications and advice where appropriate. Please note that some injuries and illnesses require medical attention. It’s important to consult a doctor before attempting any strenuous exercise.

How do I purchase classes? Do I have to sign up for a long-term commitment like a gym?
Classes can be purchased in person at the studio, on-line or over the phone. We have many options from drop-in classes to yearly memberships and everything in between. For more information please check the prices page on our website. Also note that our class packages never expire.

I cannot afford classes. Are there any options?
We believe financial concerns should never be an impediment to practicing yoga. For those in financial need, we offer scholarships in the form of discounted classes. If you think you are a candidate, please e-mail us at info@urthyoga.com for an application.

What style of yoga do you offer?
Most of our instructors teach yoga in the Anusara tradition. Anusara Yoga is a life-affirming, alignment based yoga. For more information on Anusara go to www.anusara.com

Is the room heated?
The temperature in the yoga studio is between 74 and 78 degrees. The room is only heated to maintain this temperature during the winter months when the outside temperature is cool.
