My Spiritual and Fitness Home
Urth Yoga is my spiritual and fitness home. I sought out yoga when I was in New York for its meditative benefits and when I moved to Los Angeles I needed to find my base - Urth Yoga has been my touchstone since the moment I first stepped into a class. I have yet to encounter a teacher I didn't absolutely love and a methodology that didn't suit my needs. I leave each class feeling happier and more at peace with the world and myself, and the workout too is top notch. I've sampled other studios and nothing even comes close.
My Yoga Home
Urth Yoga is my yoga home for so many reasons: the warmth of its sense of community, the studio's calm and calming energy and — perhaps above all — Urth Yoga's consistent, clearly expressed, alignment-focused technical instruction. A number of teachers over the years have made accessible poses that I used to think were beyond me. I did my first handstand at Urth Yoga, and my first arm balances. I enjoy a range of poses that I once approached with fear. Challenging poses are integrated gently and thoughtfully into classes; they are presented as invitations to explore what is possible for each of us, on that day. I recommend Urth Yoga for people new to yoga, as well as to people with an advanced practice.
Healing & Gratitude
I came to Urth Yoga looking for help with a serious back injury. After months of regular practice at Urth Yoga, I fully recovered and I am now pain free. I am so grateful for what yoga has done for me, and for what all of the outstanding Urth Yoga teachers have done, not just to help me heal, but to discover a practice through which I can grow in so many aspects of my life.
A Special Place In My Yoga Heart
Urth Yoga will always have a special place in my yoga heart. Like many enthusiastic fitness seekers, I only came to Urth Yoga after an injury - in my case, breaking my leg. It seemed like a safe exercise option to tide me over until I would be able to do high-impact activities again. And that only came after getting very bored with hot yoga. So... I was a reluctant student. My first non-hot yoga class was at Urth Yoga in 2007. I was hooked by the intelligent biomechanics of Anusara Yoga - the Universal Principles of Alignment. And the positive but relatable theme-ing made the time I spent there true physical therapy. I went almost every day for the next year, until I moved out of state. My experience at Urth Yoga was so positive that I pursued further formal Anusara training with senior teachers on the East Coast - if not for my fantastic experience with Urth Yoga teachers, I would have been blind to the opportunity to explore what has become one of my primary passions. When my job brought me back to Los Angeles, of course I returned to Urth Yoga where I was happy to find familiar faces. I cannot now imagine my life without yoga and Urth Yoga was the place where my practice first took root. :-)
Why do I practice at Urth Yoga?
Why do I practice at Urth Yoga? Because I don’t feel judged but supported, because the ethos to teaching is positive and playful, and because I come off the mat after every class feeling not only better in my body but calmer in my mind. I have suffered for many years from an injury stretching from my right hip down my leg, from weak knees, limited arm strength etc. and in getting older found myself increasingly concerned about getting hurt when doing physical exercise. What Urth Yoga has done in teaching me how to think through and understand every pose as we do them is to help me to get more confident in moving on and off the mat with ease and strength.
